Watermelon Beer? I’ll have a pint!

Autumn seasonal beers already are showing up on grocery store shelves, but summer isn’t over at the Brewery at Hershey, which is about to come out with a new summertime brew called Melonious Assault.

“It’s an American wheat beer that we ferment with real watermelon,” said Mike Wilson, one of the partners of The Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey.

The beer should be on tap in about a week and a half from now, according to Wilson’s estimate.

He said the 4.9% ABV beer is crisp, but not sweet, with a “refreshing watermelon flavor.”

Wilson said while summertime “screams fruit beer season,” the Brewery at Hershey wanted to do something a little different from the typical fruits that get mixed into beer, such as strawberries and blueberries.

So, Melonious Assault becomes something that Wilson describes as the “unexpected expected” — while people expect a light, summer wheat beer, the watermelon throws a curve ball into the mix.

“You’re not going to find a ton of watermelon beers out there,” Wilson said.
