Homebrewing Growing…

Homebrewing continues to grow, survey shows

Aha_logo2011Homebrewing continues to grow in popularity. The fourth annual Homebrew Supply Shop Survey released this week by the American Homebrewers Association shows gross revenue increased by 26 percent for shops last year.

Other highlights include 80 percent of shops reporting an increase in sales of beginner kits, 43 percent of shops saying they have been open for less than three years and the sales of beer-making ingredients outpacing wine ingredients (35 percent compared to 21 percent).

Sales of beginner kits rose an average of 23 percent, according to the 275 shops that participated in the report. The survey shows that the average homebrewer is a male between the ages of 30 and 39 who earns $26,000 to $50,000 a year.

“As homebrewing continues to grow, retail shops are responding accordingly, satisfying the needs of their increasing customer base,” Gary Glass, director of the American Homebrewers Association, said in a prepared statement. “Homebrew supply shops serve as the heart of local homebrewing communities. The success of a local shop will ensure a thriving community of homebrewers.”

The average gross revenue for shops was $1.2 million, while the median gross revenue was $265,000. The average net revenue was $118,643, while median net revenue was $60,000.
