Great Winter Beer

Now that Thanksgiving’s come and gone, we can set our eyes on Christmas and, more generally, the winter season and the beers that come along with it. To many, that means beers packed with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and any other spice you can think of. And as true as that may be, to me, it means more traditional winter warmers and dark, roasty stouts and porters.

Heart of Darkness, a 5.70% ABV English Stout, pours as black as they come with a creamy tan head. Retention and lacing are both excellent.

The aroma is inviting, starting with with roasted malts and coffee which turn slightly sweet with a faint hint of hops. The taste follows the nose: roasted barley with smoke, coffee, and charcoal that turn somewhat sweet. The robust flavors are tamed with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel and and light roasted aftertaste. Makes a great sipper on a cold winter night. Enjoy.
